Horton Ridge Malt & Grain Company – Hortonville
Horton Ridge Malt & Grain Company is owned and operated by Alan and Connor Stewart of Stewart’s Organic Farm. The idea to create a craft malt house stemmed from Alan’s curiosity about how he could bring added value to the grain he was growing. With a particular focus on rye, Alan explored the potential to make beer and whiskey from his crop.
Alan immersed himself in various books and courses on the subject of malting, and he came to realize that the Atlantic Canadian craft beer and malting industries were entirely dependent on malts that were produced outside of our region. Based on this finding, Alan decided to open Atlantic Canada’s first malt house.
Construction of Horton Ridge Malt & Grain Company began in June 2015, and the first malt was produced in April of 2016.
“Horton Ridge Malt & Grain Company is dedicated to the fine art of floor malting, using quality organic malting grains. We are currently in full production providing organic floor malts to our region’s craft and home brewers and distillers.”
Their taproom is open Monday to Saturday, 11am-8pm and Sundays 12pm-8pm. They feature beers made from their malts; their own original beers as well as those produced from their malt customers. Additional products are available for sale in their retail area: 2504 Ridge Road, Hortonville, NS.
